Listen up, I have an important fact that everyone in the United States needs to acknowledge. This is so important in fact because it concerns our modern understanding of our presidents. There is a fun fact floating around the internet about our presidents that is AN ABSOLUTE LIE. It goes something like this;
Because we have a new president this year that means that we officially have one president who is on the exact middle of our president list. Benjamin Harrison is the exact middle president currently at number 23!
This is a completely false statement. It's so wrong that it has been corrupting our history books and wikipedia lists for years. Let it be known today, that I, Chris Kaufamn, do not believe Benjamin Harrison is the exact middle president at this moment in 2021.
Perhaps, you would ask why I care so much about this fact. Thank you for asking, allow me to anwser simply; GROVER CLEVELAND IS NOT TWO MEN.
If you aren't as well verse on your 19th century history as I am let me explain. In 1885 Grover Cleveland was elected president of the United States. Great. Four years later he lost to Benjamin Harrison in 1889. But then something that has never happened in American history before or since happened; Grover Clevleand won reelection four years after his loss in 1893.
Because of this our general history has perpetuated the lie that Grover Cleveland is both the 22nd and 24th president. No. This cannot be. I'm sorry. Grover Cleveland is one man he does not get to be two people. He is either the 22nd or the 24th president. Not both.
You may say "Chris, this is stupid and you have wasted my time". I would then say, please don't take that tone with me. Truth matters.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus gets captured by the Roman government and right before his execution he has a fun little conversation with a guy named Pontus Pilate. Pilate attempts to question Jesus about who he is, and Jesus gives him some sass right back. It's an amazing scene you can read in John 18. The conversation ends with this exchange:
"Jesus replied, 'My kingdom doesn't originate from this world. If it did, my guards would fight so that I wouldn't have been arrested by the Jewish leaders. My kingdom isn't from here.'
'So you are a king?' Pilate said.
Jesus awnsered, 'You say that I am a king. I was born and come into the world for this reason: to testify to the truth. Whoever accpets the truth listens to my voice.'
'What is truth?' Pilate asked."
Jeez, Pilate sounds like a first year philosophy major. "What is truth?" Come on with that Post-Modern nonsense. Allow me to give a similarly annoying awnser to him; truth is what is true. For instance, it is true that a person cannot be two seperate people, it violates every law of nature and creation ever. Therefore it is true that GROVER CLEVELAND IS NOT BOTH THE 22ND AND THE 24TH PRESIDENT!!!!!
Notice though what Jesus says, that those who accept truth listen to His voice. I think often Christian's arent' regarded as people who listen to the truth. We want to be our own experts and not listen to the consences of the people who know what they are talking about. Often, we aren't willing to admit when we are wrong or don't know what we are talking about. But honestly, that's a shame.
I don't know a lot. If you have a computer problem or a music theory problem, I'm your guy. But ask me to fix your sink or give you an opinion on your x-ray readings, that ain't gonna go well. There's a reason we value education and that's because we usually need someone who knows about something better than us to help us. And that's okay. It doesn't make us weak or unitelligent. In fact, it makes us smarter people to ask for help.
So to be a better Christian, maybe we can start by admitting when we are wrong, or when we don't know enough. because truth matters to Jesus. There are a lot of voices yelling at us to believe them, but we are children of the Lord and should listen to His voice because He is the way, the truth, and the life. Often, that means listening to people who are smarter than us in various fields. Except when it comes to the official president list, because we all know the truth; Grover Cleveland isn't two people.
